Ellendale’s National Night Out: Check Out the Good Time

The Neighborhood Association hosted its first National Night Out event Tuesday evening, August 2nd. Many residents who attended brought lawn chairs and hung out most of the evening while both children and adults enjoyed grilled burgers and various side dishes (graciously provided by attendees), played games, got their faces painted, chatted with some neighborhood doggies, and met and mingled with their neighbors.

“I didn't even know this area was park of the park,” said resident Karen Hecker about what has been locally dubbed Slay Park West. “We walk the path around Slay Park all the time and just never knew the park extended west of McCausland.”

Karen is not the only one. Many visitors said the same thing, but regardless, everyone was happy to enjoy the evening under the shade trees and along the new Ellendale Walk which runs along Ellendale and McCausland Avenues from Canterbury Avenue (on the south) to Southwest Avenue (on the north).

Abbott EMS provided an ambulance for families to tour throughout the event and the St. Louis Fire Department had a fire engine available for about 30-minutes before they were called into service.

The evening finished as the sun went down. The winner of of the Chalk the Walk sidewalk drawing contest, 10-year-old George McGhee, was announced along with the attendance prize winners, Maria D‘Angelo and Michah Dachsteiner & her Dad.

“This was overall an amazing event,” said Jacqi Kamp, Vice President of the Ellendale Neighborhood Association and lead organizer. “It was lots of fun for the kiddos and great to meet neighbors.”

Jacqi added, “Definitely a successful first National Night Out with lots of food and lots of fun. I can‘t wait to do it again... but bigger!”
