City’s Ellendale Connector Trail Planned for 2016 — Supports Access to Future Greenways Routes
Great Rivers Greenway (GRG) is the regional parks and trails district, created by a vote of the people to build a connected trail network between St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County. The complete Greenway system consists of 16 interconnected trails, called Greenways.
The Ellendale neighborhood resides along the future extension of the River des Peres Greenway (RDP Greenway). The master plan for the RDP Greenway calls for a continuous 11-mile corridor stretching between Forest Park and the Mississippi River. It will connect into the Deer Creek, Gravois, and Mississippi Greenways along with connections to the Bike St. Louis street routes at multiple locations.
Currently, the River des Peres Greenway travels from the Shrewsbury/Lansdowne MetroLink to Carondelet Park.
Design of the River des Peres Greenway extension — north from Landsdowne Avenue into the Ellendale neighborhood at Francis R. Slay Park — will finish in 2016 with construction occurring in 2017. After this segment is completed, a continuous interconnected trail will exist from Slay Park in St. Louis City (intersection of Canterbury and Ellendale Avenues) to Jefferson Barracks Park in St. Louis County. This $3 million trail extension will include substantial work along Wabash and Ellendale Avenues and is funded by Great Rivers Greenway.
The map below highlights the extension of the River des Peres Greenway north to Slay Park.
The City’s planned Ellendale Connector Trail presents an opportunity to safely connect more of the Ellendale neighborhood to the Great Rivers Greenway system. The City plans to build a short connection from the end of the RDP Greenway at Canterbury Avenue, traveling north to Southwest Avenue along the west side of McCausland Avenue.
The map below highlights the planned Ellendale connector route.
This 0.35-mile paved trail will connect more of the neighborhood to the Greenway and allow other trail users more safe access from the north. Currently, this stretch of Ellendale Avenue does not have a sidewalk and with a high traffic volume (especially during rush hours) is a less than ideal area for walking and cycling. This connector trail will fill an important gap and help create a more complete sidewalk network in the area.
The connector trail is estimated to cost about $130,000 and will be funded from existing ward capital. Construction is expected to occur in 2016 and will finish before GRG’s River des Peres Greenway extension is completed. Improvements to the intersection at Canterbury will not be complete until later in 2017.
