Community Reports
Updates from Alderman Scott Ogilvie (24th Ward)
Currently preparing budget for improvements in 24th ward
Suggestions for potential projects are welcome please let Scott or ENA know
Potential paving projects: Lanham and Hewitt along with parts of Southwest Avenue and McCausland
Andrew Hernandez is no longer our Neighborhood Information Specialist (NIS). Complaints or concerns can still be made through the Citizen Service Bureau or feel free to contact Matt Sisul with concerns.
Accidents at Arsenal and McCausland are still an issue
Ogilvie has previously requested change in McCausland southbound signals to left turn only on green arrow, but this change has not been made.
A traffic report on McCausland from Canterbury north to the I-64 entrance was recently completed that may help with providing accident data.
Comment from resident: dropping grade of street on Northbound McCausland between Canterbury and Arsenal could fix accident problems.
Comment from resident: much of this has to do with drivers speeding
Concern: resident on Canterbury near Wilkinson School says property is very over grown. Also noticed lights left on in gymnasium. Ogilvie will contact SLPS and take care of it.
Aldermen voting records on various bills will now be available and easy to access online at the St. Louis City website.
Question from resident: What city positions will residents vote on in the August primary?
Answer: sheriff, circuit attorney, and treasurer
Comment from resident: Magnolia traffic is much better due to changing it to one way.
Wilkinson School update – There has been some recent interest to convert school to apartments with possibly an addition with access only from Canterbury.
Update from Great Rivers Greenway –River Des Peres Greenway Bike Trail - Carey Bundy (project manager)
Project has been underway since 2012
Federal funding has helped make project possible
Laborious traffic studies were conducted
Timing of project:
Bids will start soon with construction beginning in 2017
11 months anticipated for completion
Traffic will still be able to get through during construction always having one lane going north and one lane going south
Matt Sisul: What process is being used to determine which streets will no longer link to Wabash/McCausland?
Residents can still input concerns by e-mailing Carey: cbundy@grgstl.org
Eventually trail will link to Forest Park. Specific route is still not set. More data is needed to design this stretch.
Signals at Canterbury will be update for easier crossing.
Matt Sisul: Important trail specifics are posted on ENA website’s blog.
Stroke Awareness Month (Kathy Howard)
May is stroke awareness month.
80% of strokes are preventable, Missouri has one of the highest stroke rates in the US
Strokes occur from blood clots or tearing of arteries.
Strokes typically happen on one side of the brain or the other.
FAST: Face drooping –if a person can’t smile call 911, A – can’t raise arm all the way up , S – Slurring speech, T – time to call 911
Time loss is brain loss. If having symptoms call 911, don’t drive yourself!!
Kathy shared her touching story about her stroke experience in 2008.
She started the ABC Brigade which supports stroke prevention, education, and quality of life for stroke victims in the St. Louis area.
25% of strokes occur in people under 60 years of age.
Smoking and heavy alcohol use increase risks.
Stampede for Stroke, an ABC Brigade event, will occur on Oct 29th at Tower Grove Park.
Strokes for Strokes Golf tournament fundraiser will occur in August.
